Should "Marijuana" Become Legal?

A proposal to legalize and tax marijuana in California was approved by a key committee of the Assembly on January 12, 2010, over the dire warnings of police chiefs and prosecutors. Is this a sign of a soon to be "MARY JANE" smoking country? Are you one of those Americans who don’t like the idea of legalizing marijuana nationally? Well, don’t I have news for you my friend. You are totally in the minority; America is fed up with the crowd that holds us back from the sweet scent!

A new poll commissioned by ABC News has discovered that 81% of Americans thinks it's time to LEGALIZE IT:

"Eight in 10 Americans support legalizing marijuana for medical use and nearly half favor decriminalizing the drug more generally, both far higher than a decade ago."

Ok, 81% of Americans really crave this stuff guys. Maybe it’s the cool thing to do, or is it just something that has been passed down through the years? Either way it’s a proven fact that this product is in demand and the youth will forever have "Illegal" access to this wonderful plant. On the other hand, a regulated, legal market in marijuana would reduce marijuana sales and the use among teenagers, as well as reduce their exposure to other drugs in the illegal market. Being that the youth is yet our future, we still control them in a way they continuously commit and have access to "Illegal" things.

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who is apart of The Public Safety Committee made a comment on youth and how it affects them. He stated; "The way it exists now is harming our youth, drug dealers do not ask for ID. We need to regulate something that has gone chaotic, has resulted in carnage. I understand it's not everybody's cup of tea.'' Teenage use of alcohol and tobacco remain serious public health problems even though those drugs are legal for adults. Really?

Of course not everybody agrees, if so what would this big fuss be about? Could I make it about all the positives that this plant poses? Legalizing would not only simplify the development of hemp as a valuable and diverse agricultural crop in the United States, but its development as a new bio-fuel to reduce carbon emissions as well. Society never reacts to the positive side of any situation; just gossip about how this or that will harm you and its consequence.

Arrests for marijuana possession today disproportionately affect blacks and Hispanics and reinforce the perception that law enforcement is biased and prejudiced against minorities. Law enforcement has failed to demonstrate that marijuana laws can be enforced fairly without regard to race; far too often minorities are arrested for marijuana use while white/non-Hispanic Americans face a much lower risk of arrest. I’m just saying though, maybe if it was legal African-Americans along with Hispanics, would have a lower arrest rate? I’m neither racist nor biggett, just wanting you to see the flip side of this picture. Maybe you have your own opinion???

Prohibition has failed to silence marijuana users despite its best attempts over the last generation. The issue of marijuana's legalization is a persistent issue that, like marijuana, will simply not go away. Marijuana will be legalized because marijuana users will continue to fight for it until they succeed. Like I said, "Maybe you have your OWN opinion??
